Personality Disorder Treatment

North Coast Recovery can help develop a treatment plan for personality disorder treatment.

What is a Personality Disorder?

A personality disorder is a condition that causes an individual to have unhealthy methods of functioning, thinking, and behaving. Someone with a personality disorder may have difficulty relating to others, leading to relationship problems or issues at work. Those with a personality disorder often do not realize they have a problem because their way of thinking seems normal and rational to them.

Personality disorders are grouped into clusters that are based upon the type of characteristics and symptoms they produce.

Cluster A personality disorders are characterized by odd, eccentric behavior and include:

  • Paranoid personality disorder
  • Schizoid personality disorder
  • Schizotypal personality disorder

Cluster B personality disorders are those that result in overly dramatic or extremely unpredictable behavior. They include:

  • Antisocial personality disorder
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Histrionic personality disorder
  • Narcissistic personality disorder

Cluster C personality disorders are ones that produce anxious, fearful behavior, and include:

  • Avoidant personality disorder
  • Dependent personality disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, (which is not the same thing as obsessive-compulsive disorder)

Signs of Personality Disorder

Personality disorders are very complex, as many of them share similar symptoms. Additionally, some people may suffer from more than one type of personality disorder, or be diagnosed with a particular personality disorder yet possess some of the signs and symptoms of other ones. As such, it is important that individuals do not “self-diagnose” their condition, but instead ensure they are evaluated by a competent mental health professional.

Changes in Behavior

Behavioral traits can vary widely, based upon the type of personality disorder one has. Even so, some typical behaviors include erratic mood swings, depression, withdrawal from society, and difficulty maintaining relationships. Many people with a personality disorder will have frequent suicidal thoughts, leading to an increased chance of an attempt.

Physical and Mental Symptoms of Personality Disorder

Individuals who are suffering from a personality disorder exhibit a wide variety of signs, which may range from moderate to severe. A thorough medical and physical examination is needed to determine if they are associated with a personality disorder or another mental condition. Mental health professionals may also compare a patient’s symptoms to those listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. A person is generally thought to have a personality disorder if he or she has a “long-term marked deviation” from cultural norms in two or more of the following areas:

  • Perception of themselves and the people and events around them
  • Appropriate emotional responses
  • Ability to function when dealing with other people
  • An ability to control impulsive tendencies
