Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)
Not everyone who seeks treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction is a good candidate for inpatient. Many can greatly benefit from an intensive outpatient program (IOP), which is offered at North Coast Recovery.
What is an Intensive Outpatient Addiction Treatment?
An outpatient program, or IOP, is a program that is centered around work and family life and allows patients to continue their recovery therapy following detox. This type of program is sometimes recommended in lieu of admission to those patients who do not require medical detoxification. It is more intense than regular therapy, requiring at least three sessions each week for a period of two to four hours during each.
The goals of IOP are to help patients:
- Maintain sobriety
- Address the underlying issues that may have led to their substance abuse
- Develop a support network of family, friends, and others
- Learn coping skills to help them deal with temptation
- Implement new lifestyle and behavioral changes
- Develop self-discipline
Benefits of Our Intensive Outpatient Program
Many people are hesitant to seek help because being admitted to a treatment facility would pose a significant hardship. Others require additional treatment beyond what is provided by a recovery program. Any of these individuals could greatly benefit from an IOP.
Other benefits of an outpatient program include:
- Is more cost-effective than inpatient treatment
- Allows individuals greater freedom and flexibility
- Provides a support system of peers
- Addresses needs beyond the addiction, such as unemployment, homelessness, or legal issues
What to Expect from our Intensive Outpatient Program
For IOP to be successful, individuals must be committed to attending every scheduled appointment and then following through with the recommendations given by their therapist. Patients will participate in a variety of sessions designed to help them overcome a number of issues. A few of the sessions we offer include:
- Individual Therapy
- Group Therapy
- Family Therapy
- Medication Management
- Employment Counseling
- Life Skills Training
Sessions will be longer and more frequent in the beginning. As an individual progresses, appointments will be scheduled further apart and may also be shorter in duration. This process is performed gradually, allowing each patient to progress at his or her own pace.
